Biden warns Putin against using nuclear or chemical weapons

bloomberg — President Joe Biden said Vladimir Putin would face a “consistent” response from the United States if the Russian president used nuclear or chemical weapons in the Ukraine war.

“Do not. don’t Don’t,” Biden said in an excerpt from an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” when asked what he would say if Putin was considering using tactical nuclear weapons or chemical weapons in the nearly seven-month conflict. “You will change the face of war unlike anything since World War II.”

Biden declined to elaborate on possible consequences, saying that “the extent of what they do” will determine the response.

“Of course I won’t tell you. It will be consistent,” Biden said. “There will be more pariahs in the world than there have ever been. And depending on the extent of what they do will determine what the response will be.”

Biden’s full CBS interview will air Sunday night.

Various Russian officials have issued veiled threats of nuclear escalation against Ukraine, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who said in April that there “serious” risk of nuclear war. Days after invading Ukraine, Putin ordered his country’s nuclear forces on high alert for the first time since the end of the Cold War.

Most recently, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told a security conference in Moscow on August 16 that Russia has no plans to use tactical nuclear or chemical weapons in Ukraine.
