A 19-year-old was arrested Thursday on suspicion of using a fake birth certificate to enroll at a California high school and play on the football team, according to San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
Elijah Nathaniel Frisco is believed to have used the name Eihly Cheung to enroll at Montclair (California) High School. Chaffey Joint Union High School District Superintendent Matthew Holton said he has already graduated from high school.
The Tribune reported that after Montclair’s win against Pomona (Calif.) High School on Sept. 2, reports began circulating on social media that a player was ineligible. Montclair coach Martin Bacon responded to a tweet that apparently prompted an investigation by the school. The face tweeted it also attached a screenshot of a text chain, apparently dated Sept. 3, that said the player was identified as Frisco in Ponoma, according to the investigation released Thursday.
First of all, this is the first time I’ve heard this and to think that I as a coach and Montclair as a program would do something like this is crazy. Second, as a school we will get to the bottom of this cause, it is the right thing to do. That’s what I say too.

Holton released a statement saying the school contacted the athlete’s parents and then notified police.
“Montclair High School administration was notified late Friday, September 2, 2022, that a player on the Montclair High School football team was a 19-year-old who had already graduated from high school,” Holton said in the statement, according to the Tribune. “School officials contacted the subject’s parents to seek information regarding the allegations.
“After corresponding with the parents, the district notified the Montclair Police Department and law enforcement officials began an investigation. Montclair police determined that the individual misrepresented himself in the enrollment process in order to play football and he was arrested for submitting false documents to the school.
As a result, Montclair had to forfeit six football games and one basketball game last season. According to Los Angeles TimesMontclair retroactively forfeits its 2021 wins against City of Industry Workman, Hacienda Heights Wilson, Hemet West Valley, San Gabriel and South Pasadena, its 2022 win against Pomona and a basketball game from last season that held on December 17.
MaxPreps is currently showing a player name on the Montclair roster Ealy Cheng. The Tribune reported that Pomona has a player named Elijah Frisco on its 2020 roster, although that name does not appear on the MaxPreps roster page.
Pomona’s 2020 page does not list Elijah Frisco, although the Tribune reported that Pomona does have a player on its 2020 roster by that name.
