Uber Health Enters Employer Space - MedCity News

When Caitlin Donovan, global head of Uber Health, was working at a home care company CareCentrix, she encountered a patient who refused a seven-day checkup. He said his daughter had been in the hospital with him all week and he couldn’t get her to take another day off work to take him to the appointment.

“He risked his own health so his daughter could keep her job,” Donovan said. “Now imagine this from the daughter’s point of view. She had to choose between keeping her father healthy and working.

Now based in San Francisco Uber Health aims to solve this dilemma by working with self-insured employers. Donovan made the announcement Monday at HLTH conference in Las Vegas.

Employers will have a benefits administrator who analyzes their workers’ claims data. Benefits administrators will proactively reach out if they notice an employee is in need of services and schedule a doctor’s appointment along with transportation there. Users can access Uber Health through the app, through a text message or through a phone call, Donovan said.

“The administrator of this perk knows [a patient needs help] because there was a lack of claims data for that patient, or there were too many claims in the ED, and proactively reaching out to say, “Did you know you have this benefit? Do you want to use it? Let me get you a primary care appointment, your mammogram, whatever that preventive screening is, with an Uber ride there,” Donovan said in an interview.

The service not only helps those who need care themselves, but also the carers. with 43% of adults as caregivers, it is vital to provide help to this population as well, Donovan stressed.

“It’s really stressful looking after an aging parent … you have to think about critical things like getting them to the doctor, but also if they’re happy, if they can see their friends, if they can go to church, to the grocery store, to get a haircut, she said.

Uber Health already provides this solution to Medicaid and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, but it saw the need from employers as well, Donovan said.

“When we really dug into the data, we saw that employers are facing some of the same issues and the same underlying social determinants of health that you see in the traditional Medicaid/Medicare population,” she said. “So when we think about the programs that we run for those populations … I think that applies very well to a self-insured employer.”
