Ex-Twitter employees left in limbo with thousands in expenses after Elon Musk layoffs and ultimate eviction

When The new owner of Twitter, Elon Muskdecided to lay off half the employees of the company he had just bought for $44 billion, it was obvious there was going to be trouble.

But in some cases, those who are told their services are no longer needed face a double humiliation: they owe the company thousands of dollars, not knowing when they will be reimbursed.

The scale of Musk’s layoffs, which have now expanded to firing people who criticized him publicly or privately— left former workers in a sort of financial purgatory. And an email ultimatum delivered by Musk to employees demanding they work more or quit seems to have the opposite effect Thursday night, leading to a mass exodus and even fewer workers to manage operations in the company.

“People have made expenses for October while we were all employed … that haven’t been done,” said one ex Twitter employee in the UK, who asked to remain anonymous and was let go as part of Musk’s initial layoffs in early November, says Condition. The employee has about $1,000 in unpaid expenses, but says he knows of others who have up to £4,000 ($4,750) in travel expenses that have not been reimbursed.

These costs were incurred on American Express credit cards and those employees are now on the hook for late payment fees.

Screenshots of discussions from days ago in internal company Slack channels, viewed by Condition shows several people asking about missing reimbursements and confused about how the process works for furloughed workers.

“I know there are a few people in this channel asking, but I keep getting more people on my team asking about what the cost update is,” wrote one worker.

“I’m very concerned about how long this is taking,” wrote another worker.

Former employees say group chats have been full of ex-colleagues advising people who currently owe expenses to pay off any outstanding balances to avoid late card charges – but it’s not that easy.

“Some people say, ‘I don’t have that money,'” says the former British Twitter employee Condition. “I relied on Twitter to give it to me. ‘People here are in really tough situations.'”

Payments and expenses on Twitter are sent through a system called Concur, get pre-approved by artificial intelligence, then sent to a manager for sign-off. If the expense is approved by the manager, it is processed and paid within about a week.

Expenses owed by some laid-off employees were processed three weeks ago, before Musk took over the company. “Not only is it not [been paid out], but has disappeared from Concur,” says the former UK employee. “There are a lot of people in the Signal channels who are very scared of getting back between £400 and £8,000 of spend.”

Former staff have been frantically emailing addresses given to them after being laid off by the company to try to figure out how to get those expenses – to no avail.

“Apparently everyone is fired,” says the former employee. “So nobody gets any answers. I don’t know what’s happening now.”

Earlier this week, Musk sent a midnight email to remaining employees telling them they could either commit to a new “extremely tough” work culture at the company or leave. All around An additional 1,000 to 1,200 employees are believed to have left the company of an ultimatum Thursday night, and it’s unclear how many people still remain on the social media site.

A current American Twitter employee who still works for the company said Condition that one of his expense reports had been approved but not paid. Another was not approved by their manager because their manager was laid off.

“The response we’ve had is that they’re overwhelmed because everyone rushed to submit expenses once word got out about the cuts,” he said Condition. He estimates he owes close to $1,000.

“A lot of people are probably in a lot of debt [because] many used wellness and learning allowances,” said the current Twitter employee. “I’ve also heard of people who have gone off-site or traveled, so they may be worse off.”

Currently, Twitter does not have a communications department, so Condition could not be reached for comment.
