Google pauses payment requirement on Play Store in India after antitrust injunction

Google announced today that it’s rolling out a range of new features for Maps, Search and Shopping. The company unveiled most of the new features during its Search by event in September and is now starting to roll them out to consumers.

Search

Starting today, users will be able to use Search to find their favorite dish in a restaurant near them. For example, you can search for “truffle mac and cheese near me” to see which restaurants nearby have the dish on their menu. Once you’ve found a specific dish you’re looking for, you can get more information about its price, ingredients, and more.

Another new search functionality allows you to use Google’s multisearch feature to find a specific food near you. Say you see something delicious looking for online, but you don’t know what it is or where to find it. You can now use Lens in the Google app for Android or iOS to take a photo or screenshot of a dish and add the words “near me” to find a place that sells it nearby.

Later this year, Google will release an update to its Lens AR Translate capabilities so that users can more seamlessly translate text against complex backgrounds. Instead of covering the original text as it does now, Google will erase the text and recreate the pixels underneath with an AI-generated background, and then overlay the translated text on top of the image.

As for the new Maps features, Google is rolling out a new visual search experience called Live in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo.

“Let’s say you’re visiting New York with plans to stop your holiday shopping and catch up with friends,” Google said in a blog post. “Pick up your phone and tap the camera icon in the search bar to see nearby stores and other places like coffee shops, banks and ATMs. With AR-powered directions and arrows, you can see what direction they’re in and how far away they are—and even spot places that aren’t in your immediate view (like a clothing store around the block) to get a real sense of the neighborhood with a glance.’

If you want to find other places, you can tap categories to explore what restaurants, bars, dessert shops, parks and public stops are nearby. In addition to showing information about where the seats are, users will be able to see key information about each overlay, such as whether the location is occupied, whether it’s open, what the price range is, and more.

Another new feature of Maps does it’s easier for EV owners to find the best charging station for their car. You can now search for “EV charging stations” and select the “fast charging” filter. You can also filter for stations that offer your EV’s plug type.

Google also announced that it is expanding its Accessible Places feature globally after initially rolling it out in the US, Australia, Japan and the UK in 2020. The feature is designed to help people determine if a location is accessible to wheelchairs. You can turn on the “accessible places” setting in the app, then you’ll start seeing a wheelchair icon in places that are wheelchair accessible. You’ll be able to see if a location has accessible seating, restrooms, and parking. Google notes that the feature can also be useful if you want to avoid stairs because you have a stroller or use a stroller.

Shopping

Google has announced a new shopping feature in AR that’s designed to make it easier to find your exact foundation. The company says its new photo library includes 148 models representing a diverse spectrum of skin tones, ages, genders, face shapes, ethnicities and skin types. As a result, it should be easier for shoppers to better visualize how different products will look on them.

“Here’s how it works: Search Google for a shade of foundation in a range of prices and brands, such as ‘Armani Luminous Silk Foundation,'” Google explained in a blog post. “You’ll see what this foundation looks like on models with similar skin tones, including before and after photos to help you decide which one works best for you.” Once you find one you like, just choose a retailer to shop from.”

Users can now too shop for shoes using AR. Starting today, you can start exploring shoes from brands like Saucony, VANS, and Merrell. The feature will be compatible with more brands in the future, Google says. You can start by searching for a type of sneaker, such as “Shop Blue VANS Sneakers” and tapping “Browse in My Space.” You’ll then be able to rotate, zoom in, and view the shoes in your space to more easily see if you like the color, laces, tread, etc.
